FACEBOOK GETTING A RAW DEAL IN THE PRESS

Share |

Wow, it was all over the news today:

  • Facebook worm “Koobface” is back
  • Facebook Worm Comes From Infected Friends
  • Worm spreads on Facebook, hijacks users’ clicks
  • Facebook Worm Refuses to Die
  • Young workers’ use of social networking sites concerns IT staffs
  • As Facebook spreads, so does malware

In fact, the spammers do post bogus links like: “You look just awesome in this new movie” or “You look so amazing funny on our new video” – whereupon the browser clicks the link and goes to some Russian website where they are prompted to download & install the newest Adobe Flash Player.
Unwary (ie: careless) users then click & install a malicious executable file which hijacks their whole facebook account.

It seems a bit unfair to me that the press is making people terrified of facebook.com, when the real issue here is getting duped into executing a malicious executable file, believing that it is Adobe Flash Player.

What’s their angle? Is Adobe more litigious?

Blaming facebook.com for this worm is like blaming Microsoft Outlook for various viruses that fool users and hijack that program.

It just seems to me that facebook.com is not the real problem here, so much as users being accustomed to screw-ups involving Adobe ;-)
